Armed man shot after standoff outside CIA headquarters in Virginia

An armed man, who also claimed he had a bomb in his vehicle, was shot outside CIA headquarters in Virginia on Monday, according to reports and FBI officials.

The suspect, who was not immediately identified, was wounded in an FBI agent-involved shooting at about 6 p.m. Monday after an hours-long standoff outside the headquarters in McLean, the FBI’s Washington field office said.

The man allegedly drove up to the gates of the CIA building that morning and made statements indicating he had a bomb in his vehicle, CNN reported, citing sources close to the matter.

Law enforcement sources also told NBC News the suspect tried to drive into CIA headquarters and brandished a gun before being shot by FBI agents.

One source said the man — who is mentally disturbed and tried previously to breach the CIA’s campus — claimed to have explosives, but authorities have not confirmed whether he did, NBC News reported.

A CIA spokesman told CNN in a statement earlier Monday its compound “remains secured” and that its Security Protective Officers were the only agency personnel directly involved in the incident.
