ON THE wall of a plush eighth-floor Berlin apartment, somewhat incongruously amidst opera paraphernalia and Buddha statues, hang a pair of tiny white shoes. Despite being decades old, they are immaculate; the only clue to their history is the stiffness of the leather and some beige-brown stains, the colour of the city’s mud.
